August 7, 2025 – Quebec City
Day 2
After another nice breakfast (the cottage cheese and sour cream are at the yoghurt case and I can get it myself), we disembarked the ship and waited for the shuttle. Today we are taking the shuttle to the lower city – the shuttle drops off at the Drawbridge,
which passes over a set of
locks. When we got there, the bridge was up to let a sailboat pass from the
marina to the St Lawrence river. Two
other little boats were also in the locks.
The drawbridge consisted of two
bridges – one was lowered and we were able to walk across the little body of
water.
There wasn’t much to see on this walk – mostly businesses. We did walk by the Musee de la Civilization, which was featuring a Titanic Exhibition.
They even
had a little balcony set up so you could do a Kate Winslet.
It was good distance
from there to the Quebec City Mural and Place Royale.
Over the last
couple of days, I have been dealing with shin splints, making it difficult to
walk. At Place Royale, I found a
comfortable bench in the shade while Ellen checked out the souvenir shops. She didn’t come up with anything.
The funicular
was right up the street from the gift shops so we decided to ride it to the
Upper City. The charge is $5 CAD per
person – cash only. I used the ATM,
which tacked on a huge service charge (around $8), which I hope to get back
from Citibank.
We were the
last two people on the tram so we got a nice view of the St Lawrence River
below.
We looked around for a place to have lunch but it was now noon and every seat in every restaurant was taken (and people were in line). I found a nice bench in the Place D’Armes and got a nice view of Le Monument de la Foi while Ellen watched a little show involving large dolls manipulated by people inside. I met her there and again we couldn’t find a place to eat.
We realized
that getting lunch off ship here was not going to work out and went back and
caught the shuttle and in a little while we were back on the ship.
It was
actually too hot on the Sunset Veranda so we ate inside in the Windows
Café (tuna salad, soup, and green salad – my usual lunch – along with a
beer. The ship doesn’t have Grolsch so I usually order a Stella or a Leffe. We hung out there much of the afternoon.
The Windows
Café was featuring the Taste of Britain tonight. The Fish and Chips, pretty much cooked to
order, were very good.
We went to the Captain’s Toast at 9:00 PM followed by guest entertainer – comedian Scott Harris – saw him 11 years ago on the Ocean Princess.
He is only here for one night. His act ran almost an hour but was pretty funny – I remember some of the jokes from over a decade ago. It was pretty late when he finished so our next destination was our room.
