August 13, 2025 – At Sea – Labrador Sea
The time change was a little more tolerable this time out.
Still got up early. Had breakfast in the Windows Café – still flowing with cottage cheese and sour cream. It is interesting that cottage cheese is not on the breakfast buffet but you can get it on Room Service.
You couldn't tell by looking out at the sea but here was a lot of ship traffic on the West Coast of Greenland today. There are two other cruise ships in the area.
I went to Ron Orenstein’s talk on “Tropical Greenland”. He had a huge turnout and did a nice job. He ran a little long and I had to hurry up just a bit to get started on time.
My talk: “Death
in Iceland: The Birna Brjansdottir Murder” was at 11:00 AM with the biggest
competition being the Quest Buffet. For
some reason, the two slides I took of Reykjavik and the Birna Crime Scene were
not in this version. Don’t know how that
happened but the talk was OK without them. The attendance continues to be very good – an
almost full house. I should mention that
one guest, who is hearing impaired, has asked me to wear a wireless transmitter
(linked to her hearing aids). It is a
very fancy tie clasp.
At the noon
announcements, Captain Dario said that due to weather conditions we would not
be stopping at Nuuk tomorrow – we would continue on to a glacier. I’ll know more details when I see the letter
in the stateroom tonight.
I met Ellen in
the Discoveries Restaurant for the Brunch. We both had pancakes and two fried eggs and
assorted sweets. I really wanted some
herring in wine sauce but that herring disappears pretty quickly into the
cruise.
The afternoon was spent in the Living
room. It got a bit loud from the
afternoon games (because it was so cold outside, the corn hole toss was held
inside). We moved to the very quiet
Library – Deck 10 Forward.
Tonight was “Taste
of Italy” in Windows Café – basically, the only theme night where we can
actually put together a full meal. We
got up there early so we could get to the pasta station before it got all
treifed up. Tonight, however, there was
no pasta station but a Risotto Station – the risotto was precooked and then
sauteed along with garlic and mushrooms to finish the dish. There was also eggplant parmesan on the
buffet. Both dishes were actually pretty
good although the eggplant could have used more sauce which was not available.
The Caprese Salad was made fresh to order but the balsamic vinegar had strong
salty taste – I know what that should taste like and salty is not it.
We passed on
the show tonight – the musical director was the headliner.
Captain Dario
came on the PA system to announce and confirm that due to 40 mph winds in Nuk, we would
need to pass up the port and instead be at sea - no glacier -until we got to our next port –
Sisimiut.
We spent some
time in the Library (where it is quiet) instead of the packed Living Room. I was surprised that Bernardo showed up in
the Library and ask if I could do a presentation tomorrow on our unscheduled
sea day. I said that would be fine – I
would do “DNA Testing: Cold Cases Closed”. Bernardo ran down to his office and got my
jump drive and I copied the blurb for that talk for the Insider. Ellen told me that Bernardo called the
stateroom and found out that I was in the Library.
The ship is getting pretty cold – the doors are opened occasionally which brings the temp down. Our stateroom was also cold so the heat is almost at maximum. By the time, we got to our stateroom, the new Insider was already printed and distributed.
