An early peak through the porthole (pre-dawn) revealed a gray day at sea and a little chop. Still warm though and as long as it doesn't rain, I'm good.
Quiet night – got a little sleep but still getting up real early – shaved and showered all before going up to have breakfast in the Windows Café. Today I had a pancake (freshly made and very good) and two eggs OM (I am saving millions of dollars eating their eggs which are at atmospheric prices back home).
When I got to the Cabaret Lounge to set up for my 10 AM
talk – “Forensics and History: The
Search for the Unknown Titanic Child”, there was no one there; no people,
no A/V guy, no screen. What there was
was a table with a menorah on it and a box with Catholic Mass stuff, and a lot
of bottle of liquor on the floor. A few
people showed up at 9:45 AM but I was getting concerned so I called the A/V number
on the podium – the tech answered and said he was in the booth. I didn’t see anyone in there and he didn’t
come out – he said they come and set up about 15 minutes before. He also moved the table and liquor so people
could see.
People came in around 9:55 AM and at the gun, the theater
had the biggest turnout on these two cruises – more than 80 percent full –
there were people sitting in the seats in the back by the bar. I started off by correcting something I said
about carbon dating yesterday – no disinformation here. The talk went very well and I finished at
10:46 AM (Ellen came in at the end). I
spoke to a few people but got my stuff and cleared the podium because the
Future Cruise manager was on next and we need those future cruises.
Ellen and I went to the Discoveries Bar at the invitation of Lee and Darren to have a
coffee sit down involving all the speakers on board. We all introduced ourselves and all sorts of
discussions followed including one on climate change and how we shouldn’t talk
about it because some people are upset about it. I was pretty tired having just finished my
talk so I had very little to say but that wasn’t a problem because we do have
some speakers that like to talk. Still
it was a good idea to have everyone in the same place.
Today, was the Brunch
Day – this time called “The Sunday Brunch” instead of the Onward
Brunch. We both got there kind of late
so a lot of the stuff was gone. I did
have the omelet girl make me a veggie omelet which was very good and very unlike
the omelet I had recently upstairs. I
wanted some lox but they had to bring cream cheese and there were no bagels. I
also tried some of the desserts but I really wasn’t that hungry.
Literally, the rest of the day was spent on Deck 5 – I am trying to finish my book, “The Edge”, by David Baldacci and I am making progress. It’s hard to read when you’re tired and there is a tendency to nod off. The weather looks like it's getting better and the sea and sky are always interesting,
Tonight is “Taste
of Germany” in the buffet but we were in the Discoveries Restaurant looking
forward to our special ordered pasta. I
also had a Cesar Salad, which was better than the one upstairs. The Fettuccini with Cream Sauce – aka
Fettuccini Alfredo – was delicious. We
went upstairs for dessert and wandered through all of the varieties of
sausages. It was nice on the Veranda but
we went downstairs to hear a little bit of Bob’s Billy Joel tribute; he did a
great job on Billy’s songs because his singing style is similar to Billy’s. After, he did “My Life” (and very well), we
went to the Cabaret Lounge for
Showtime.
This is the third time Eric Walton has performed – I
didn’t go to his shows on Cruise #1 and I though tonight’s show was all about
magic. It was actually his mentalist
show. The first trick was to have five
audience members flip though a deck of cards, find a car, and memorize it.
After all five did this, they all stood up.
Eric then ask them to sit down if he mentioned their cards. All five sat down together. We’ve seen this done before by other
magician/mentalists. It was clever but there’s
a trick in there somewhere. We left at
that point and went back to The Den.
The couple across from us was discussing my Titanic talk – I don’t pay attention to conversations around me but Ellen picked up on it and told them that I was actually the speaker. They were surprised and we talked a bit about the Titanic. It was very pleasant. They headed to the next show and we headed to the room.
