December 17, 2024 – Road Town, Tortola BVI – Mostly Cloudy = 82F

A beautiful day in the British Virgin Islands.

Onward is docked here.

Probably the best sleeping night of the cruise – got up early and then fell back asleep until near 7 AM.  Got to the Windows Café at about 7:30 AM and found that the Sunset Veranda was not open due to overnight rains – it seems that it rained overnight every night of this cruise.  I found a table for four near the window on the starboard -usually less crowded - side.

I wanted to try something different so I had an omelet with tomatoes, onions, and cheddar cheese along with a toasted bagel. I tried the oatmeal today but it was gooey so I had a small bowl of some kind of granola and raisins plus Euro Rice Krispies.  Beside the cereal the best part of the breakfast was the bagel – I detected no tomatoes or onions in my omelet even though I saw the chef put them there.  How strange. I even tried, because I was still hungry, a chocolate covered jelly donut.  The donuts are very doughy and the jelly was unidentifiable but it was still good.  While I was away from the table, a woman seated herself there even though my magazine and coffee were still there.  I grabbed my magazine and moved to another table in the back.

From my new seat I saw the Marella Discovery docked alongside of Onward.

In a previous life, this ship was the Splendour of the Seas before joining the TUI fleet.  This is one of biggest ships in their fleet.

Also got a nice view of Road Town, Tortola.

After breakfast I went outside on Deck 5 but couldn’t stay there long because the ship was holding their weekly safety drill and the decks were in use.  As I was making my way to the Mosaic Café for coffee, I tripped on the wooden door floor slat and took a beautiful header on to the carpet at the entrance to the Café. No one in the Café noticed the fall and I was able to get right up.  Just bruises on my right elbow and right knee.  I put some antibiotic cream on them.  I will probably feel some additional aches later.  I have been taking a daily anti-inflammatory med for my arthritic everything so that might proactively help.

I got my ice mocha decaf and drank it in the Café.  I guess no one actually did see me swan dive.  When the drill was over I went back outside – there was a nice breeze and a great view.

Lunch was on the Sunset Veranda and I couldn’t get anything from the Patio since they were having a fancy Deck barbecue (so much smoke I couldn’t even walk out there). So salad bar, tuna scoop, some breaded Sole, and some bread comprised lunch.  Today, I had a Stella with my lunch.  It’s an early departure today at 2 PM and Onward pushed right on time.  While out there, I finished “Indigo Slam”, which turned out to be a very good book.  I’m all up to date on Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole Novels.

It was a very nice sail away – lots of smaller islands and then the open ocean.

I went back to the room to go over my talk tomorrow.  I took out some slides to make it shorter.  We’ll see if that works.

Tonight is “Taste of Greece” so there will be nothing for me to eat. I wound up with Greek Salad, some pasta I had to check on for no meat, some fancy Greek bread, and baklava. The pasta was strange but OK and the salad was all right.  Greek night just doesn’t have a lot of options.  The view from the Veranda was great.

I’m not going to see “Amped Up” in the Theater.  Instead I started a new book by David Baldacci called “The Edge”, Book 2 of his “6:20 Man” series (I don’t even though what that means – perhaps I should have started with the first book).  The protagonist, Travis Devine, seems like an interesting military trained character, the kind that Baldacci has done before (e.g. John Puller).

Clocks move back one hour to put us on EST.

The ship was moving a bit earlier – not rock and roll but you had to be aware of the motion.  Things are smooth in the room. I told Lee not to make up the room tonight – I was hardly in it.

And the laundry came back this afternoon – nothing missing and everything looked nice.  Started a new bag.
