6/27/26 – Underway – Partly Cloudy – Very Warm – 94F

 6/27/26 – Underway – Partly Cloudy – Very Warm – 94F

Up early enough to shower and still be at the Sky Lounge at 7:00 AM. Dealing with a dull headache this morning and a little dizziness. Found a nice seat on the back deck. Went with the oatmeal w brown sugar and raisins today instead of the cold cereal. The oatmeal was very good and the coffee in the jug is hot and good.

The boat stopped completely at 7:26AM for a few minutes (heard some banging from the paddle wheel); started again at 7:35 AM. This was our position when we were all stop.

I wonder if it snagged some of the tree debris in the river, there’s a lot of it including what looked to be entire tree trunks.  This is my breakfast view.

Ellen and I had our real breakfast in the Sky Lounge as well. Bagels with cream cheese and very fancy smoked salmon (had to ask for a fresh bagel - the toasted bagel halves on the buffet had been there a while and were hard). I also had butter on part of my bagel which I, of course, dipped in my coffee. We both had blueberry scones and an alleged cheese Danish. Overall, this was a good choice.

We sat outside on deck 5 but are now on our veranda for the first time (the bugs were removed a couple of days ago). We're going to stay out even if the cabin cleaning crew comes in.  Here's the first photo from the veranda.

11:22 AM - the river is pretty wide now so we're pretty far from shore. Passed several homes on stilts so the river does overflow its banks.

I got a notification on my phone that this area of the Mississippi River was issued an extreme heat watch (heat index 109F).

The AC inside is working fine.

We didn't want the hassle of figuring out lunch in the Restaurant so we checked out the lunch buffet on 4. It looked good on paper with veggie Cream of Cauliflower Soup, a salad with feta and almonds, and loaded potato skins, and sandwich options with grilled veggies. The soup was too salty to eat (a first). It wasn't just me - Ellen also couldn't eat the soup because of its saltiness. As for the salad,  there was no feta and the lettuce was foofoo. I settled for the loaded potato covered with cheese, a bag of cheddar Sun Chips, and a diet Coke. Ellen found some peanut butter cake, which was good. All in all, I had almost three diet Cokes. Not exactly the Lunch of Champions.

Alanna, the onboard entertainer was in the Sky Lounge so I went up and told her that we liked her show yesterday.  I asked her if she ever did any Linda Ronstadt.  Based on her reaction, I wasn’t sure she knew who that was.  I told her that her singing style was similar to Ronstadt’s when she was a Stone Pony. She said she would look it up but my expectations are low.

I asked JJ the "bartender" in the Sky Louge is he could make mixed drinks - he said he could.  I asked for a Mojito and he said he had no mint and no limes.  So I actually had a "Fauxjito" made with Rum, Sugar, and Sprite.  It was OK sort of.

We spent a little time after lunch on the Deck 4 Veranda.

We also passed a sand fune and sand bar composed of that spcial sand called "loess".

In our wonderfully cool cabin now for a bit. Using my new Bluetooth earbuds, which work very well. Since we have free Wi-Fi (along with the occasional phone signal) I can listen to both tunes one my phone or Pandora.

Dinner was in the Restaurant (actually, there’s no other option for dinner) at 5:30 PM (that was our time all cruise). I started with another iceberg wedge with ranch dressing (good). The bread tonight was tiny pieces just a little bigger than the butter pat. We both had the Zucchini Parmesan (thin noodles with tomato basil sauce w Parmesan crusted zucchini strips on top). I took off the arugula and the rest of the dish was fine. Finished off with a very rich but tasty carrot cake and decaf coffee (I should mention that so far in this cruise the coffee has been consistently hot and good). Dinner took about an hour, a new record.  As the Restaurant filled up, it got noisy so we headed to the Sky Lounge, which was deserted.

We went to Alana Mosely's second show at 8:30 PM.   Staying with her casual approach, she worse the same white jumpsuit she had on when I spoke to her at lunch.

We only stayed for four song (only recognized the Bonnie Rait "Give Them Something to Talk About").  She spent way too long on a lead in to her own song, "Get Lost". Simply too whiny so we left. She's still very good at getting a lot of different sounds out of her guitar.

There was music in the cabin and it didn't come from next door (I wrote him a note this morning about his TV being too loud). So, it was an ear plug night, which means a suboptimal night's sleep. Luckily, the music stopped around 10:45 PM so the earplugs were not necessary.  NOTE: We found out later that Alanna added an other hour on to her performance and it was her singing and guitar that we heard in our room. It did sound familiar.  Interesting but still annoying to people try to get some sleep.
